Karachi Deputy Mayor Supports Toll Tax to Boost KMC Revenue

Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah has defended the imposition of a toll tax on vehicles using Karachi’s roads, stating that the move aims to make the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) financially self-sufficient.

Speaking on Geo News’ “Geo Pakistan,” Abdullah explained that the toll tax will be collected by the Excise Department on roads within KMC’s jurisdiction. He emphasized that ongoing infrastructure work aims to improve commuter convenience across the city.

During a City Council meeting on Tuesday, the council approved the toll tax collection in collaboration with the Sindh Excise and Taxation Department. The tax will apply to vehicles using Karachi’s roads and bridges, following a resolution presented by Irshad Ali Advocate and Dil Muhammad.

At a press conference following the session, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab noted that while many institutions, including the National Highway Authority, already collect toll taxes, Karachi itself has not benefited from such revenue.

Abdullah also mentioned that the local government has coordinated with all towns for the efficient removal of offal during Eid ul Adha. He urged citizens to avoid disposing of offal on the streets to maintain cleanliness in the city. “We will work collectively to keep our city clean,” he assured.
