K-Electric Proposes Rs 10 Hike in Karachi’s Electricity Tariff

K-Electric has requested the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to raise the base electricity tariff in Karachi by Rs 10, increasing it from Rs 33 to Rs 44. This proposal is part of K-Electric’s multi-year tariff petition, which supports their extensive investment plan.

The investment plan, worth $2 billion, aims to enhance Karachi’s electricity infrastructure over the next seven years. It includes the construction of fourteen new grid stations and the installation of 550 kilometers of transmission lines. These improvements are designed to meet the city’s growing electricity demands and ensure a stable power supply.

An online public hearing on K-Electric’s request was held by NEPRA on Thursday. During the hearing, K-Electric’s Director of Communication, Imran Rana, stated that the increase in the base tariff would not affect Karachi’s electricity consumers due to the uniform electricity rate policy in place across the country.

Despite opposition from stakeholders during the hearing, K-Electric emphasized the importance of a flexible multi-year tariff that could be reviewed annually to enhance its effectiveness. The approval of this tariff is deemed essential for maintaining a balanced supply and demand of electricity in the city.

K-Electric’s spokesperson highlighted that the seven-year plan involves not only the installation of new grids and transmission lines but also the implementation of aerial bundle cables on 1700 PMTs. These upgrades are crucial for meeting the future electricity needs of Karachi and ensuring a reliable supply for its residents.
