K-Electric to Cut Power Supply to Karachi Government Offices Over Unpaid Dues

K-Electric has announced plans to cut off electricity to government departments in Karachi due to unpaid bills amounting to 1.7 billion rupees. The company warned that if the outstanding amount is not paid, power to 64 government departments in Sindh will be disconnected. This decision follows numerous ignored demands for payment.

In a letter addressed to both the Chief Secretary and Secretary of Energy, K-Electric emphasized the urgency of the situation. Despite sending eight reminders, the government has failed to settle the dues or pay recent bills as previously agreed, forcing the company to take this drastic step.

The letter highlighted that in 2019, the Sindh government committed to clearing all outstanding dues and ensuring timely payment of new bills, with the responsibility assigned to the Energy Department. However, this promise has not been upheld.

K-Electric is now proceeding with plans to disconnect electricity to these provincial departments, urging the government to resolve the issue promptly and pay both old and new dues. Along with the letter, K-Electric has provided a detailed list of the 64 departments that face disconnection if the situation is not addressed immediately.

This looming power cut threatens to significantly disrupt government operations in Karachi, highlighting the urgent need for a resolution to the payment dispute. As the deadline approaches, attention remains on whether the Sindh government will step up to resolve the financial deadlock with K-Electric and keep the lights on.
