Karachi Board Reschedules Intermediate Exams Amid Heatwave, Sets New Dates for 2024

In a significant update for students, the Karachi Board of Intermediate Education (BIEK) has announced a revised schedule for the 2024 intermediate examinations. The board has set the new dates from June 1 to July 1, accommodating nearly 290,000 students who are set to participate in this crucial academic milestone.

The decision comes after careful consideration of the logistical challenges posed by the overlapping schedules of matric and intermediate exams. Initially, there was a proposal to commence the intermediate exams on May 28; however, the BIEK Chairman clarified that conducting both sets of exams simultaneously at the same centers was impractical. In response to these concerns, board officials had previously requested a four-day extension from the education minister.

The updated timetable reflects a split schedule to facilitate the smooth conduct of exams for different groups. Students in the Science group will have their exams in the morning session, from 9 am to 12 pm, while those in the General group will take their exams in the afternoon session, from 2 pm to 5 pm.

This rescheduling also takes into account the ongoing heatwave in Sindh, which has prompted adjustments to the exam dates. The impact of extreme heat on students’ health and academic performance is a growing concern. Studies have shown that high temperatures can impair cognitive function and learning, with more pronounced effects on students from lower-income backgrounds. In light of this, the BIEK’s proactive approach aims to ensure the safety and well-being of students while maintaining the integrity of the examination process.

The BIEK’s commitment to providing a conducive environment for students to perform their best is evident in this decision. As the exams approach, students are encouraged to prepare diligently and stay informed about any further updates from the board.

The Karachi Board’s efforts to adapt to the challenges posed by the heatwave underscore the importance of prioritizing student welfare in academic planning. As the city braces for higher temperatures, the board’s revised schedule is a testament to its adaptability and dedication to student success.
