Karachi, July 4 – A six-storey residential building collapsed in Lyari’s Baghdadi area on Friday, leaving at least seven people dead and several others injured, according to rescue officials. Around 20–25 people are feared trapped under the rubble as rescue operations continue.
Emergency teams, including Chhipa Welfare, rushed to the scene. Five people, including three women, have been rescued and shifted to hospitals. An adjacent building also sustained structural damage.
The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) said the building was previously declared unsafe, though locals deny receiving evacuation notices. The SBCA reports 578 unsafe buildings exist in Karachi, most in District South.
Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori has ordered full-scale rescue efforts and strict action against negligence. A high-level committee has been formed to investigate, and SBCA officials have been suspended.
This comes just four days after a similar partial collapse in Kharadar, where a rooftop water tank damaged staircases and trapped residents—fortunately, without casualties.
