Karachi Mayor Plans to Ease Traffic with Lyari Expressway

Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has unveiled plans to relieve congestion on Karachi’s main roads by redirecting heavy traffic to the Lyari Expressway. In a recent meeting with officials from the National Highway Authority, Karachi Port Trust, and Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), Wahab emphasized the necessity of utilizing existing infrastructure more effectively to manage the city’s growing traffic challenges.

Highlighting the strain on Karachi’s roads due to continuous heavy traffic flow, Wahab proposed redirecting heavy vehicles to the Lyari Expressway pending a positive feasibility report. This strategic move aims to improve overall traffic flow across the city.

The meeting, conducted at the KMC headquarters, discussed various strategies to optimize the use of the Lyari Expressway. Wahab underscored the urgency of organizing traffic on Karachi’s major arteries amidst escalating congestion issues.

By opening up the Lyari Expressway to heavy traffic, Wahab anticipates alleviating pressure on key routes and enhancing mobility. He pointed out that heavy traffic currently causes significant delays and environmental impacts from Mauripur to Landhi, affecting roads like Mauripur Road, M.T. Khan Road, Sunset Boulevard, Korangi Road, and Jam Sadiq Bridge.

Concluding the meeting, Wahab emphasized the need for swift action in addressing Karachi’s traffic woes, awaiting a third-party report on the feasibility of this traffic management initiative by Thursday.
