With Eid-ul-Azha just five days away, the Karachi Northern Bypass cattle market is seeing a surge in the purchase of sacrificial animals. Buyers have noted a decrease in prices, with more than 80,000 animals sold so far. Compared to the initial days, prices have dropped by around five percent.
Recently, a tourist family from Poland visited the market and expressed their amazement. The central cattle market for sacrificial animals in Karachi has been operational since May 10, 2024, at Taiser Town on the Northern Bypass. Local authorities have promised to provide facilities for buyers and traders, including food courts and ATMs, as well as proper parking areas for customers.
Law enforcement agencies are implementing strict security measures by setting up police pickets. Last year, the administration of the main sacrificial cattle market on the Karachi Northern Bypass generated business activity worth Rs8 billion during the Eid-ul-Azha season. Previously, this traditional cattle market was set up in the Sohrab Goth area of Karachi, but it has now been relocated to the Northern Bypass in District West.
Last year, approximately 700,000 sacrificial animals were brought to the market, with 600,000 sold, setting a record-breaking figure. Additionally, the Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) reported that 6,360,000 animals were sacrificed on Eid-ul-Azha in 2023, noting a 28% to 30% reduction in the number of animals sacrificed compared to previous years.
