The Nazimabad underpass, located near the petrol pump and Ghalib Library in Karachi, is in bad shape, causing safety concerns for people in the area. This important route has developed large cracks in its walls, and the plaster is falling off, creating risks for both vehicles and pedestrians.
The condition of the underpass has worsened, with plaster completely worn away in some spots, exposing steel reinforcements (rebar) that are starting to come loose. This situation is dangerous as falling plaster and loose rebar can damage passing vehicles and potentially cause serious accidents if not fixed soon.
Local residents are calling on authorities to repair the underpass quickly to avoid any tragic incidents. They remember an incident from last year when a signboard fell from the same underpass walls, killing one person and injuring two others.
A report presented to Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab by the DG Technical Services revealed that drug addicts had cut the rebar of the underpass, which led to the previous accident. The report also mentioned that these individuals have stolen water drainage motors from various underpasses in the city, making the structural problems worse.
In response, Mayor Murtaza Wahab has instructed KMC officers and staff to take strong actions against those damaging the infrastructure. He stressed the need for immediate repairs and increased security to prevent further damage.
The local community continues to urge quick action to ensure the safety of commuters and restore the Nazimabad underpass. Immediate repairs are essential for public safety and maintaining the city’s infrastructure.
