Sindh Energy Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah announced on Wednesday that K-Electric will reduce loadshedding across Karachi within the next few days.
During a media briefing at the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Sindh Transmission and Dispatch Company (STDC), K-Electric, and National Steel Complex Limited (NSCL), Shah stated that K-Electric aims to cut down loadshedding times, particularly during night and peak hours, to provide relief to residents in the sweltering heat.
The MoU, signed by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of STDC Muhammad Salim Shaikh, CEO of NSCL Zaigham Adil Rizvi, and CEO of K-Electric Monis Abdullah Alvi, involves laying a 40-megawatt transmission line from the Pipri Grid Station to NSCL at Port Qasim Authority. The STDC, which is the first Provincial Grid Company (PGC) license holder, is tasked with developing electric power transmission infrastructure of 132 kV and above.
Shah emphasized that through this collaboration, K-Electric will supply 40 megawatts of electricity to the National Steel Complex via a 132 kV transmission line. This project also includes constructing the necessary infrastructure for the transmission line.
He noted that the project would enhance private investors’ confidence in the STDC and the Sindh Energy Department, fostering job creation and economic growth in the province.
CEO STDC Muhammad Salim Shaikh highlighted other key projects, including a June 13 MoU with GO Energy for Pakistan’s first 500 MW floating solar power project. This project, in collaboration with the Departments of Alternative Energy and Irrigation, will see a 220 kV transmission line laid from the Kenjhar Lake Power Project to K-Electric Dhabeji Grid Station in Karachi, expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
Additionally, on June 15, 2024, STDC signed an MoU with Gul Ahmed Group for constructing a 132 kV transmission line from a power plant in the Jhampir Wind Corridor to Gul Ahmed Group in Landhi. The Department of Alternative Energy has already secured land in the Jhampir Area Wind Corridor for this purpose. The 60 km transmission line will transport 100 MW of wind power and is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
The Sindh government is committed to accelerating renewable energy use to reduce the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) tariff and make electricity more affordable. These renewable energy initiatives will also contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, promoting a clean, reliable, and sustainable environment.
Provincial Minister Saeed Ghani, Sindh Energy Secretary Mussadiq Ahmed Khan, and other senior officials attended the ceremony.
