Karachi Erupts in Protests Over Severe Electricity and Water Crisis

Frustration over prolonged electricity and water shortages led to widespread protests in Karachi, according to Express News. The city faced a challenging night, not only due to the sweltering heat but also because of an escalating electricity crisis that plunged many areas into darkness.

In the Buffer Zone and New Karachi’s Godhra Chowk, protestors blocked traffic to express their grievances. They staged sit-ins on roads leading to Sohrab Goth, Namak Bank, and Shafiq Mor, condemning authorities and demanding the immediate restoration of power and water services.

Similar protests erupted near Godhra Chowk, where residents affected by the shortages brought traffic to a halt. Roads were blocked with tires and garbage set on fire by protestors in Gharibabad and other sectors, causing traffic jams and inconveniencing commuters.

Despite police efforts to calm the situation, the electricity supply remained disrupted throughout the night. Protestors voiced their frustration, citing year-long power outages every two hours and complaining about unreliable electricity despite hefty bills.

“The situation has crossed all limits,” one protestor remarked, comparing Karachi’s plight to other global struggles. They criticized the government for failing to provide essential services and threatened to continue protests until their demands were met.

The crisis has led to demonstrations across various neighborhoods, including Maripur, Lyari, and Malir, highlighting widespread discontent. Despite sporadic road blockades and fiery protests, the underlying issues persist, exacerbating public frustration.
