Heatstroke Death Toll in Karachi Rises to 49

The death toll from heatstroke in Karachi has reached 49, with four more fatalities reported between June 21 and July 1, 2024.

The Sindh Health Department released statistics indicating that the four latest deaths occurred at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH). ASH has reported the highest number of heatstroke deaths, totaling 23.

Additionally, 18 people have died from heatstroke at Dr. Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK), three at Sindh Government Qatar Hospital Orangi Town, and five at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC).

Earlier reports from the National Disaster Management Authority’s (NDMA) National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) predicted intense cloud bursts from eastern India that could affect Pakistan.

Early warnings have been issued to all provinces, forecasting moderate to heavy rainfall in the upper catchments of major rivers, particularly Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab, starting July 2, 2024. The NDMA also issued a lightning alert, expecting strikes in South and Central Punjab and Islamabad from July 5-7.
